Postpartum Bleeding and Staying Comfortable
Share
Bringing a baby into the world is a beautiful experience, but postpartum recovery can come with a few challenges—including postpartum bleeding, also known as lochia. While it’s completely normal, it can be unpredictable, inconvenient, and sometimes overwhelming.
Finding the right protection during this time is essential for both comfort and peace of mind.
At Lily Pads, we understand that new mums need a quick, easy and comfortable way to manage postpartum bleeding. Our period underwear, designed with a removable absorbent pad, makes changing throughout the day quick and hassle-free - perfect for busy mums adjusting to life with a newborn.
What Is Postpartum Bleeding?
Lochia is the body’s natural way of clearing out the uterine lining after birth. It’s similar to a period but lasts four to six weeks on average - though the length and flow can vary from person to person.
For example, our founder Leah, experienced postpartum bleeding for up to 8 weeks, with fairly heavy bleeding in the beginning. She found Lily Pads to be a lifesaver after her fourth baby and wishes she had them for her first three children.
No more feeling like you’re wearing a nappy or a surfboard pad—just comfort and discretion.
Typically, postpartum bleeding changes over time on average it can be:
Days 1-4: Heavy bleeding, bright red in color
Days 5-10: Lighter bleeding, pink or brown in color
Days 11-21: Continued light flow or spotting, yellow or white discharge
Up to 6 weeks (or longer): Occasional spotting as the body fully heals
The first few days can feel like a heavy period, and traditional postpartum pads are often bulky and uncomfortable. That’s why having a comfortable, discreet, and easy-to-change option like Lily Pads can make a huge difference during recovery.
Remember if you ever have any concerns about your postpartum bleeding, be sure to speak to your GP.
Tips for Managing Postpartum Bleeding
Prioritise rest - your body is healing, and overexertion can cause heavier bleeding.
Watch for warning signs like large clots, an unpleasant smell, or excessive bleeding, and call your healthcare provider if you’re concerned.
Have multiple pairs of period underwear or pads so you always have a fresh option.
Change pads or underwear frequently to maintain comfort and prevent irritation.
Use a washable wet bag for easy storage when you’re on the go.
